BulletSafe Body Armor Review: VP3, Plates & Carrier 2026

Posted by Bulletproof Zone Editorial Team · September 05, 2022

BulletSafe body armor brand spotlight — VP3 vest, plate carrier, riot shield

Quick answer: BulletSafe makes NIJ Listed Level IIIA soft armor and Level IV hard plates at prices most competitors won't touch. The VP3 vest starts under $300 and is NIJ Listed under Standard 0101.06 at Level IIIA. Founded in 2013 by engineer Tom Nardone and now owned by Sellmark, BulletSafe is a legitimate option for security professionals and civilian buyers on a tight budget.

Body armor for under $300 sounds like a marketing trick. With most reputable IIIA vests running $400 to $700 (Safe Life Defense, Premier Body Armor, and similar brands all sit in that range), BulletSafe's price point is genuinely unusual. The question worth asking is whether the savings come at a cost to performance or protection standards. Short answer: the VP3 cleared the NIJ Compliance Testing Program and is listed on the NIJ Compliant Products List under Standard 0101.06 at Level IIIA. That is verifiable. Our NIJ protection levels guide explains what that means in practice if you want the ballistics background.

Who is BulletSafe?

Tom Nardone founded BulletSafe in the Detroit area around 2011, with the first product shipping in the summer of 2013. An engineer with prior stints at Sikorsky Aircraft and Ford Motor Company, Nardone noticed that vests had moved from Kevlar to Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) to cut manufacturing costs, but retail prices hadn't followed. His pitch was simple: pass the savings on and sell a compliant IIIA vest under $300.

Tom Nardone, founder of BulletSafe

The brand was acquired by Sellmark Corporation sometime around 2022. Sellmark also owns Sightmark and Pulsar optics brands, so the operational infrastructure is real. The product line has expanded since the acquisition: the VP3 remains the flagship soft armor vest, and standalone Level IV plates plus a tactical plate carrier now round out the catalog.

BulletSafe NIJ Level IIIA Bullet-Resistant Vest

Bulletproof Zone has carried BulletSafe products since 2018. The VP3 has been one of our consistently highest-selling concealable vests across that entire period, which tells you something about how the price-to-performance ratio lands with actual buyers.

What does the BulletSafe VP3 vest actually protect against?

BulletSafe VP3 bullet-resistant vest, NIJ Listed Level IIIA

The VP3 is NIJ Listed under Standard 0101.06 at Level IIIA, which means it has passed the NIJ Compliance Testing Program and appears on the NIJ Compliant Products List. Level IIIA stops 9mm FMJ at 1,430 fps and .44 Magnum SJHP at 1,400 fps. It will not stop rifle rounds; for that you need hard plates (see below).

The ballistic panels use a blend of UHMWPE polyethylene and aramid fibers, and BulletSafe's own published testing shows the vest handling at least six hits from common handgun calibers without panel failure. The vest also carries tested resistance to most stab and slash attacks from edged and spiked weapons, which matters if your environment involves close-contact risk.

The carrier is 600 Denier polyester, gender-neutral, and designed for concealed wear under a uniform or plain clothes. Worth knowing: the 600D carrier holds up fine under normal daily use, but the seam stitching at the shoulder panels shows wear after roughly 18 months of consistent sweaty-season carry. That is not unusual for this price tier, and the ballistic panels themselves outlast the carrier. BulletSafe sells replacement carriers if you get there. Sizing runs XS through 4XL, weight ranges 3.39 lb (XS) to 6.90 lb (4XL), and it arrives ready to wear without fitting or modification required.

VP3 Accessories and Upgrades

BulletSafe Tactical Front Carrier accessory with MOLLE webbing

The BulletSafe Tactical Front Carrier swaps out the standard concealment carrier for an overt, over-uniform version with MOLLE/PALS webbing rows across the front panel. If you're a corrections officer or armed security professional who needs to mount a radio pouch, mag holder, or taser holster without buying a separate plate carrier, this is the practical move.

BulletSafe Level IV standalone ballistic plate, NIJ Listed

The VP3's front and rear pockets (all sizes except XS) accept a 10"x12" BulletSafe Level IV standalone hard plate that is NIJ Listed under 0101.06 at Level IV, meaning it is rated to stop .30 caliber armor-piercing (M2 AP) at 2,880 fps. Stacking a Level IV plate inside a IIIA vest gives you ICW (in-conjunction-with) rifle-rated protection at a fraction of a full plate carrier setup cost. The tradeoff is weight and heat, particularly if you're wearing it concealed for a 12-hour shift.

What is the BulletSafe Tactical Plate Carrier?

BulletSafe Tactical Plate Carrier with MOLLE webbing

The BulletSafe Tactical Plate Carrier is a dedicated overt carrier for hard armor plates, not a soft armor vest with MOLLE bolted on. The shell is a combination of 600 Denier polyester and neoprene padding, with adjustable padded shoulder straps, a padded waist strap, and a top drag handle. Front and back MOLLE/PALS webbing accepts standard pouches. Plate installation and removal is quick-detach.

It is not trying to compete with Spiritus Systems or Ferro Concept at the $300-plus carrier tier. This is a budget-tier overt carrier designed to house BulletSafe's own plates, and at that job it does what it says. If you need something with more cummerbund adjustability or side plate compatibility, look at a dedicated plate carrier setup. Our plate carrier collection covers those options. For a training carrier or a grab-and-go option at home, the BulletSafe carrier is honest about what it is.

Who should consider the BulletSafe RiotReady Shield?

BulletSafe RiotReady Shield — 35.5 inch polycarbonate riot shield

The BulletSafe RiotReady Shield is a 35.5" x 19.5" polycarbonate shield weighing 5.8 lb, designed for crowd-management and civil unrest scenarios rather than ballistic threats. Polycarbonate at this thickness stops thrown objects, swung impact weapons, and splatter, but it is not a ballistic-rated shield. If you're in a role where ballistic protection from a hand-held shield matters, you need a different product category entirely.

That said, at 5.8 lb it is genuinely lightweight for a shield this size, and the optical clarity is good enough for fast threat assessment. Security professionals doing crowd work, event security at high-risk venues, and LE agencies with limited riot-shield budgets are the realistic buyer here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BulletSafe body armor actually NIJ Listed?

Yes. The VP3 vest is NIJ Listed under Standard 0101.06 at Level IIIA, meaning it passed the NIJ Compliance Testing Program and appears on the NIJ Compliant Products List. "NIJ Listed" and "NIJ Compliant" are the accurate descriptors; "NIJ Certified" is technically imprecise phrasing that the NIJ itself does not use. The BulletSafe Level IV standalone plates are also NIJ Listed under 0101.06.

Who is BulletSafe designed for?

BulletSafe's core audience is uniformed security guards, corrections officers, and civilian buyers who need a compliant IIIA vest but can't absorb a $500 to $700 price tag. The VP3 is also popular with armed civilians, urban preppers, and recreational shooters who want a duty-capable concealment vest without the premium-brand markup. It is not positioned as a law enforcement duty vest competing with Point Blank or Safariland at the $800-plus tier.

What is the difference between the VP3 and the VP4?

The original flagship was the VP3 (Vital Protection 3). BulletSafe subsequently released the VP4 as a product-line update. The Bulletproof Zone product page URL currently routes to the VP4 variant at the same IIIA protection tier. Both are NIJ Listed under 0101.06 Level IIIA. Check the current product listing for the active model at time of purchase.

Can I add rifle-rated protection to a BulletSafe vest?

Yes, if you have a size larger than XS. The VP3/VP4 front and rear pockets accept a 10"x12" BulletSafe Level IV standalone plate, which is NIJ Listed under 0101.06 at Level IV (rated to stop .30 caliber M2 AP at 2,880 fps). This gives you ICW rifle-rated protection without a separate plate carrier. The weight penalty is real: a Level IV ceramic plate typically runs 7 to 8 lb per plate, so you're adding significant load to an already-warm concealment vest.

Is BulletSafe still made in the USA?

BulletSafe has historically emphasized US manufacturing. Following the Sellmark acquisition, verify the current country of origin on the product spec sheet before purchase if this matters to your procurement requirements. Berry Amendment compliance, for instance, requires domestic manufacture and Sellmark's supply-chain sourcing should be confirmed directly.

What warranty does BulletSafe offer?

BulletSafe historically offered a 5-year warranty on ballistic panels. Confirm current warranty terms directly with BulletSafe or on the product page, as Sellmark's acquisition may have modified the terms.

How does BulletSafe compare to Safe Life Defense at the same price point?

Safe Life Defense's entry-level IIIA vest runs roughly $350 to $400 and is also NIJ Listed under 0101.06 Level IIIA. The primary differences are fit and carrier quality: Safe Life Defense uses a more contoured carrier with better female-fit sizing options, while the BulletSafe VP3 is a flatter, more universal fit. Both are legitimate choices at this price range. If female-specific fit matters, Safe Life Defense has the edge; if you're prioritizing the lowest price on a compliant IIIA vest, BulletSafe wins.

Key takeaways:

  • BulletSafe's VP3/VP4 is NIJ Listed under Standard 0101.06 at Level IIIA, not just "tested to NIJ standards," but actually on the Compliant Products List.
  • Starting price under $300 is real, not bait-and-switch. That is roughly $150 to $300 less than comparable IIIA vests from Safe Life Defense or Premier Body Armor.
  • The 600D polyester carrier shows wear after 18 months of hard daily use. Budget accordingly for carrier replacement if this is a duty vest.
  • Level IV standalone plates can be inserted into VP3/VP4 pockets (XS excluded) for ICW rifle-rated protection without a separate plate carrier setup.
  • BulletSafe is now owned by Sellmark Corporation. Verify current warranty terms and country of origin on the product page before purchase.

Performance characterizations referenced in this article are based on the manufacturer's NIJ test parameters and/or independent laboratory testing as cited inline. NIJ does not "certify" body armor; products that pass the Compliance Testing Program (CTP) are issued a Notice of Compliance and listed on the NIJ Compliant Products List. Models referenced as "tested to NIJ standards" have not necessarily completed the CTP. Verify CPL status at nij.ojp.gov before purchase.
