Built as part of Level II of the Extended Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS), a military layering standard in use since the 1980s, these bottoms combine moisture-wicking performance with a breakaway closure system for fast removal over boots. Available in sizes Small through 2XL.

Breakaway Design for Rapid Removal

The Rothco ECWCS Level II Breakaway Bottoms feature hook-and-loop closures running down the outside of each leg. This construction allows the wearer to remove the bottoms quickly without taking off boots first, a practical advantage when transitioning between environments or adjusting layers in the field. The elastic waistband accommodates a range of body types without requiring a precise fit adjustment.

Moisture Management and Odor Control

The 93% polyester / 7% spandex construction gives these bottoms moisture-wicking properties that move perspiration away from the skin, helping to keep the wearer warm and dry during sustained activity in cold conditions. The grid fleece material also provides odor defense, which matters during extended wear between washing opportunities, a common reality in field or operational settings.

Part of a Coordinated Layering System

These bottoms are the lower half of the ECWCS Gen III Level II system. A matching Level II Mid-Weight Underwear Top is available separately, allowing users to build out a complete base layer that works within the broader ECWCS layering framework. Wearing matched pieces from the same system helps ensure consistent thermal and moisture performance across the torso and legs.

Features

Breakaway Hook-and-Loop Leg Closures: run the full outside length of each leg for removal without removing boots

Moisture-Wicking Construction: 93% polyester / 7% spandex fabric moves moisture away from skin

Odor-Defending Grid Fleece: material resists odor buildup during extended wear

Elastic Waistband: accommodates a wide range of body types

ECWCS Level II Rated: part of the military Extended Cold Weather Clothing System layering standard

Matching Top Available: pairs with the Rothco Level II Mid-Weight Underwear Top

Specifications

Specification

Detail

Brand

Rothco

Material

93% Polyester / 7% Spandex

Closure System

Hook-and-loop down outside of each leg

Waistband

Elastic

ECWCS Level

Level II (Mid-Weight)

Sizes

S, M, L, XL, 2XL

Cold Weather Rated

Yes

Country of Origin

China

Who This Is For and Isn't

These bottoms suit military personnel, law enforcement, and outdoor users who need a mid-weight thermal base layer that can be removed quickly over boots in cold-weather environments. Level II is the mid-weight base layer, worn over a lighter Level I layer and under heavier insulating and shell layers. These bottoms occupy that mid-weight base-layer position in the system.

Do these bottoms have any ballistic or protective rating?

No. The Rothco ECWCS Level II Breakaway Bottoms are thermal base-layer underwear.
